BEE Star Label on a Refrigerator: How to Read It (2026)

How to read the BEE star label on a fridge, what changed in 2026, which size and type to buy, and whether extra stars pay back. Calculator and 10 models.

Quick answer: A BEE star label compares fridges of the same kind: more stars means less electricity for the same job. Refrigerators are already on the BEE mandatory star-labelling list, and from 1 January 2026 a revised rating table applies (valid to 31 December 2028), so a 3-star fridge made today is not the same as a 3-star from 2025. Compare the yearly kWh on the label, not only the stars. In the Amazon listings we read, one 190 L fridge shows 155 kWh a year at 3 stars and 136 kWh at 4 stars: a gap of 19 units, or about Rs 133 a year at Rs 7 a unit.

A fridge runs 24 hours a day for ten years or more, so its electricity use adds up even when each month looks small. The star label is the quickest way to compare, if you know what it does and does not tell you. This guide explains how to read the label, what changed in 2026, which size and type suit your home, and how to work out whether paying more for extra stars makes sense. Facts were checked on 27 October 2026.

What the label shows

  • Stars, from 1 to 5. More stars mean lower energy use compared with fridges of a similar kind and size.
  • Yearly energy use in kWh (units). This is the most useful number for comparing two models. Many Amazon listings now state it in the specification table.
  • Brand and model. The label must match the model in front of you. A different variant can have a different rating.
  • Capacity in litres. The stars compare fridges of a similar size. A bigger fridge can have the same stars as a smaller one and still use more units.

Is star labelling mandatory for refrigerators?

Yes. A Press Information Bureau document current to 20 October 2023 lists Frost Free Refrigerator, Direct Cool Refrigerator and Deep Freezers among 15 appliances under mandatory BEE star labelling. The same list keeps Side by Side / Multi Door Refrigerators in the voluntary group, so a premium multi-door fridge may carry a star label without being required to.

Some 2026 news and retail articles say star labelling “became mandatory” for refrigerators on 1 January 2026. The government list above shows that frost-free and direct-cool fridges were already mandatory. What changed in January 2026 is the rating table, covered next.

What changed on 1 January 2026

  • A new star table. A compliance firm summarising the BEE revision says the new star-rating tables for frost-free and direct-cool refrigerators take effect on 1 January 2026 and run to 31 December 2028. Existing models stayed valid to 31 December 2025.
  • Tougher bands. Croma’s explainer says the energy limits were recalibrated, so a fridge needs to use less power to earn the top ratings, and that a model rated 4 or 5 stars under the old rules may not qualify for the same rating now. That does not mean older fridges perform worse. The bar moved.
  • Price effect. Business Standard reported that industry executives expected prices of cooling appliances to rise 5 to 10 per cent. Godrej Appliances’ Kamal Nandi expected a 3 to 5 per cent rise for refrigerators. These were estimates in December 2025, not final prices.

What to do with this: do not compare stars across years. A 4-star fridge from 2025 and a 4-star fridge from 2026 may not use the same energy. Compare the kWh printed on each label.

How big a fridge do you need?

No rule sets the right size for a family, so this comes from manufacturers and buying guides. LG suggests 150 to 250 L for a couple with one child, and a small 40 to 100 L fridge for one person. Mishry’s buying guide places single-door fridges at 150 to 220 L for one or two people, double-door fridges at 250 to 350 L for two to four people, and side-by-side or French-door fridges at 500 to 800 L for five to eight people.

Mishry’s guide says a normal compressor switches off when the target temperature is reached and restarts when it warms, while an inverter compressor adjusts its speed, runs quietly with lower wear and can save 20 to 30 per cent on electricity. That figure is a guide’s claim, not a test result, so check each model’s kWh on its label.

Do extra stars pay back?

The extra price of a higher-star model has to be earned back through lower electricity bills. In the Amazon listings we read, the Haier 190 L direct-cool fridge shows these annual energy figures: 155 kWh at 3 stars and 136 kWh at 4 stars. The difference is 19 units a year.

Item3 star (155 kWh)4 star (136 kWh)Difference
Units a year15513619
Cost a year at Rs 7 a unitRs 1,085Rs 952Rs 133
Cost over 10 years at Rs 7 a unitRs 10,850Rs 9,520Rs 1,330

At a rate of Rs 7 a unit, an extra star saved about Rs 133 a year in this pair. If a 4-star model costs Rs 3,000 more, it would take about 22 years to pay back through electricity alone. If it costs Rs 800 more, it pays back in about six years. LG gives a larger estimate for the gap between a 1-star and a 5-star fridge: about Rs 300 more a year to run the 1-star one, up to Rs 1,800 in all. Use the calculator with your own numbers.

A short checklist for the shop

  • Pick the capacity first: go by the number of people, then check the kitchen space, doorway and door swing.
  • Choose the type: frost free or direct cool.
  • Shortlist models, then write down the yearly kWh from each label.
  • Put the prices and kWh in the calculator with your electricity rate.
  • Ask about the compressor warranty and the service network in your city.
  • Check that the label is on the product and matches the model number on the bill.

How to use any fridge efficiently

  • Keep the door shut. Frequent opening makes the compressor restart.
  • Do not overload the shelves, because air needs to move.
  • Leave space around the fridge for heat to escape, as the manual says, and keep it away from the stove and direct sun.
  • Hot or humid cities raise the load, so a model that is efficient in a cool place may use more in Mumbai or Chennai.
  • Do not put hot food in. Let it cool first.
  • Defrost a direct-cool fridge regularly. Mishry also advises cleaning a removable gasket at least every six months and decluttering the fridge every week or two.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5-star fridge always cheaper to run?

Usually it uses less energy than a lower-star fridge of a similar size, but not always by a large amount. In one pair of Amazon listings the gap between 3 and 4 stars was 19 units a year. Compare the kWh on the labels, since a big 5-star fridge can use more units than a small 3-star one.

Are star ratings the same for all sizes?

Ratings compare fridges of a similar size and type, because larger fridges need more energy to cool. A 4-star fridge of 400 L still uses more electricity than a 4-star fridge of 190 L.

Is star labelling mandatory for refrigerators?

The PIB list current to 20 October 2023 shows frost-free and direct-cool refrigerators and deep freezers as mandatory. Side-by-side and multi-door fridges are listed as voluntary. A revised star table applies from 1 January 2026.

Is an inverter fridge worth it?

An inverter compressor changes speed instead of switching on and off, and one buying guide says it can save 20 to 30 per cent on electricity. Check the model’s own kWh on the label to see the real saving.

Will fridge prices keep rising?

Nobody can know. Business Standard reported industry expectations of a 3 to 5 per cent rise for refrigerators after the January 2026 rating change. Check the current price before you buy.

How much electricity does a fridge use?

The annual kWh on the label is the answer for each model. For example, a 190 L direct-cool fridge in one Amazon listing states 155 kWh a year, which is about Rs 1,085 at Rs 7 a unit.

Direct cool or frost free for a small family?

A direct-cool single door is the cheapest to buy and, according to LG, uses less energy, but you need to defrost it. Frost free is more convenient. Pick by how much effort you will put in.

This guide is general information. Check the label on the product and the BEE website for the exact rules.
